PILGRIM
Vaccinium macrocarpon Nothing says Thanksgiving quite like fresh cranberries on the table. This season, the botanist and plant lover can adorn their table with a live cranberry plant, trailing in evergreen foliage. This semi-woody perennial is not only an attractive ornamental plant, but a highly productive, fruit-bearing groundcover when planted outside. Pilgrim cranberry is a superior variety prized for abundant crops of large flavorful red berries that are high in anthocyanins and vitamin C.
Ornamentally, you can keep your plant in the house for the holidays, eventually planting outside while dormant. They have small, deep green, glossy leaves and red tinged stems trailing from 6 inches to multiple feet once they reach maturity. They can be used in hanging baskets, in a permaculture garden and as groundcover or in a decorative pot. Outdoors the foliage will imbibe color in the fall with striking golden and red hues. Cranberries will grow quickly, bearing lovely white flowers in the spring, attracting pollinators, and producing ample fruit the following year after planting. Enjoy the fruits’ unique tart sweetness for drying, adding to salads, candying, fermenting, in sauces and fresh relishes with citrus. These plants are self-fertile, and they thrive in zones 4-9.
